What could a decentralised hydrogen supply look like?

The Kopernikus project Power-to-X deals with the question of how renewable electricity can be efficiently stored for later use. Without suitable storage methods, the energy generated can only be used at the time of generation. Even today, there are times when high quantities of regeneratively generated electrical energy lead to an oversupply of electricity in the German power grid. Today, this surplus electricity is exported at poor conditions - a missed opportunity. In stored form, this energy could eliminate bottlenecks at times of low feed-in of renewable energies.

In the Kopernikus project "Power-to-X" different possibilities of material energy storage are considered. These include platform chemicals and gaseous or liquid fuels. As in the energy storage research area of the Energy Campus, alternative organic fuels such as methane, synthetic diesel or petrol are being investigated alongside hydrogen.

The Chair of Chemical Reaction Engineering will contribute its expertise in the field of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) for long-distance transport and long-term storage of hydrogen. This has been established not least in numerous projects on the Energy Campus (EnCN) and thus represents the link between EnCN and the Kopernikus Research Network.

In addition to research institutes such as the RWTH Aachen, the Forschungszentrum Juelich or the Helmholtz Centre, numerous industrial partners are also involved in the Kopernikus network.
