Biomass and Emissions Reduction
Biomass is a key stabilising pillar in an energy system with an increasing share of fluctuating electrictiy generation from wind an solar PV. In the heating sector, the combination of heat pumps an biomass is particulary promising. At the same time, however, high pollutant emissions from domestic wood-burning stoves, particulary from wood-burning stoves with incomplete combustion, are a source of criticism. Solutions to this problem have been under development for years. Experimental work is mainly carried out at the Rednitzhembach Technical Centre. The focus ist both on combustion optimisation itself and on innovative secondary measure for emission reduction, such as filtering or electrostatic precipitators, which have the potential to be used economically even on a very small scale.
