CarbonNeutralLNG

CarbonNeutralLNG aims to achieve the truly climate-neutral use of biogenic carbon in order to replace fossil fuels in the transport sector with BioLNG enriched with renewable electricity. Non-electric transport will rely on liquid and gaseous energy carriers such as liquefied natural gas (LNG). As a liquid fuel with high energy density, BioLNG is particularly advantageous for the heavy goods vehicle and maritime transport sectors. A proposed hybrid catalytic process combines chemical-catalytic and biological methanation with electrical methanogenesis to reduce process complexity and maximise carbon efficiency. Low-cost renewable electricity will be the main driver for falling marginal costs in BioLNG production.
The experimental work addresses the main components of the hybrid catalytic process chain and focuses on the development and testing of a sorption-enhanced e-gasifier, an additively manufactured reactor for chemical-catalytic crude methanisation, and biological methane production via biological methanisation and electromethanogenesis.
