FNR-Project I_WESP

The aim of the I_WESP intelligent (innovative_wood electrostatic precipitator) project is to develop an innovative, compact and intelligent electrostatic precipitator for dust emissions from small domestic wood-fired heating systems, designed for installation in living spaces. The small electrostatic precipitator is intended to be available both for installation in new systems and as a retrofit solution for existing systems. The innovative core of the project lies primarily in the design of the small filter system as a plate filter, which allows the filter to be constructed in a flatter and more compact manner. Until now, small electrostatic precipitators have been designed exclusively as tube filters, which poses no problem when installed alongside automatically operated boiler systems with higher thermal output. However, when it comes to integration into living spaces, far higher demands are placed on the unit in terms of compactness, design and noise emissions. Another key focus is the development of a novel cleaning and discharge system that enables dust-free disposal of the separated residues.

Specifically, the following key development objectives and requirements can be outlined:

  • the E-Filter must reliably and consistently remain below the specified dust limit values
  • low energy consumption through automatic adaptation to operating conditions
  • compact, robust design with a small footprint (retrofitting, residential areas)
  • simple cleaning method, maintenance-free, dust-free discharge
  • low noise levels, electromagnetic compatibility
  • easy to operate, low maintenance requirements
  • integration of simple sensor technology for measuring dust concentration
  • low purchase costs
