“Combined removal of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter in decentralised biomass combustion systems for the utilisation of biogenic residues, waste materials and fuels from Paludi crops”

“BioSNCR” is working on the development of a cost-effective flue gas cleaning system for decentralised biomass combustion plants with a capacity of up to 500 kW. An innovative combination of gas scrubbing and dust separation is designed to utilise biogenic residual and fuel materials from Paludi crops for heat supply whilst complying with the applicable emission limits. The focus is on reducing nitrogen oxide emissions.
Using the selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) process, urea is sprayed into the afterburner chamber of the combustion plants. Upon contact with the hot flue gases, the urea breaks down and combines with the nitrogen oxides, producing nitrogen and water vapour. Particulate matter emissions are also reduced through the use of an electrostatic precipitator, flue gas condensation and gas scrubbing.

Carried out by: Georg Simon Ohm University of Applied Sciences, Nuremberg

Sub-project 2: Combined removal of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter in decentralised biomass combustion systems – development of a scrubber system
Carried out by: VSS-Umwelttechnik GmbH, Troisdorf

Sub-project 1:

The key topics of the first sub-project are the reduction of NOx emissions using the SNCR process (urea injection into the afterburner chamber), the reduction of dust emissions using electrostatic precipitators, flue gas condensation and gas scrubbers, the expansion of the fuel range to include biogenic residues and waste materials as well as fuels from paludiculture with, amongst other things, higher nitrogen contents, the improvement of resource efficiency by increasing the extraction of useful heat, and the use of resulting by-products as fertiliser in agriculture.
The use of fuels from paludiculture (reeds and cattails, for example) contributes to climate protection, peatland conservation, and the sustainable management and safeguarding of value chains in agriculture. A key innovation lies in the intelligent, compact and cost-effective integration of separation processes, which have been tried and tested in large-scale plants or motorised applications and are now being adapted to the conditions of decentralised biomass boilers in combination with wet gas scrubbing.
As part of the collaborative project, Nuremberg Tech is responsible for the laboratory testing of the process as well as virtual analysis using CFD simulation.
