CarbonateClusters

The CarbonateClusters project focuses on carbon dioxide capture and storage from biogenic energy sources (BECCS) as a strategy for implementing land-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) to enable negative emissions.
The proposed approach utilises a novel open carbonate looping process, in which biogenic CO₂ is captured decentrally in small-scale biomass combustion plants and released again in larger calcination plants. An electrically heated steam calciner supplies CaO sorbent with ideal properties for CO₂ capture in decentralised small and medium-sized biomass combustion plants and provides biogenic carbon for geological sequestration. Key innovations here are the electrically heated steam calciner and a new CO₂ adsorber concept based on hot-gas cartridge filters. A socio-economic assessment will compare the economic impacts and analyse support policies that could favour ‘green’ emission allowances and negative emission technologies, as well as the technology’s contribution to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The CarbonateClusters concept thus contributes effectively to the German government’s climate neutrality targets by enabling negative CO₂ emissions.
