Research is to be conducted into the integration of electrochromic photovoltaic films into transparent façade elements (windows and other glazing) to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. To this end, a hybrid optoelectronic system manufactured using printing technology is being developed, combining the functions of ‘switchable dimming’ (electrochromic) and ‘power generation’ (photovoltaic). The positive impact of such a system on building efficiency is being investigated through experimental studies, measurements and simulations.
The multifunctionality, design flexibility and weather resistance offer great potential in building technology and the energy transition. Thanks to the printing-based manufacturing process and factory integration into glazing, the system can be implemented cost-effectively in the medium term and is sustainable due to minimal material usage (ultra-thin-film technology) and the use of environmentally friendly materials.
At the heart of the project lies the development of hybrid optoelectronics, whereby both the photovoltaic and electrochromic components require sophisticated development steps for their individual functional layers in order to ensure functionality, performance, processability and stability. Subsequently, a cost-effective area scaling will be developed and prototypes manufactured, which will be installed and measured by the project partners in a test rig. This development will be accompanied by systematic investigations based on building energy, indoor climate and lighting modelling, which will be incorporated iteratively into the optimisation of the hybrid optoelectronics. In parallel, control methods for the shading function are being developed for various scenarios and user requirements. Concurrently, architectural and structural aspects are being examined for the further development into series products and coordinated with the project partners.
