OHA4flexgrid

How can existing infrastructure in the electricity grid be utilised more fully without jeopardising security of supply? This is the question being addressed by the OHA4flexgrid research project, which got underway on 12 October 2026 with a kick-off meeting at the Energie Campus Nürnberg.

The OHA4flexgrid project stands for ‘Optimised Utilisation of Grid Level 4 Equipment’ in combination with flexibility measures to increase the absorption capacity of medium-voltage grids, and is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy with a total of approximately 2.4 million euros. Together with partners from academia, grid operators and industry, the project is investigating how Grid Level 4 equipment – ranging from high-voltage/medium-voltage transformers, through switchgear and converters, to protection technology – can be utilised to a greater extent and combined with flexibility instruments such as redispatch, Section 14c of the Energy Act (EnWG) or storage systems.

Combining higher utilisation with flexibility

At the kick-off meeting, the partners presented the work packages and agreed on the next steps. The focus is on the correct modelling and monitoring of transformers and switchgear, the adaptation of protection technology, legal assessments and the application of increased utilisation in grid planning and grid operations management. Finally, the equipment is to be operated at higher utilisation levels in a field trial under real grid operating conditions.
